Fall Hunt Test - click here for information

2009 Hunt Test Dates:  Spring Hunt Test - April 18-19, 2009 - Fall Hunt Test - Sept 19-20, 2009

Training Day Roundup and Training Day Announcement - Training days have been held each month since March.  Attendance has varied wildly, with as many as 26 dogs handled by 10 handlers.  We have trained in snow (see photos by member Pam Jameson at www.gundogphotos.com ), rain, and heat.  Venues have included Woodbury Wildlife Area, Delaware Wildlife Area, and Johnstown Sportsmen’s Club.  A special thanks to those members who attended in July, as the opening “scenario” of the day was picking up trash along Route 541 in Coshocton, in fulfillment of the club’s commitment to the clean highways program.

The 2009 OVRC Singles Championship was won by Guage owned and handled by Ed Schillig. Congrats to Ed and Guage.

Those who wish to contribute to Bob Reckart's recovery fund can do so at http://www.heintel.net/amberwood/accident-news.html#fund. Just click on "Donate".  Bob's progress can be monitored here -  http://www.heintel.net/amberwood/accident-news.html.  Cards and letters should be sent here:

  • OVRC member Jack Martin has been elected into the Retriever Field Trial Hall of Fame and the induction takes place in February. Jack and Judy are thrilled with the news and are looking forward to the induction ceremony that takes place in TN. Congrats Jack. The following is the citation used at the induction:

JOHN W. MARTIN

John has been a continual field trial participant since 1966 and a 40-year member of the Ohio Valley Retriever Club, a member of the Labrador Retriever Club and the Maumee Valley Retriever club.

He competed in 13 Nationals and 24 Amateur Nationals. He won the 1981 National with FC/AFC Orion's Sky (already a Hall of Fame dog).  He judged the Amateur National in 1987 and created a checklist for national judges that is still used today by some. That list eliminates public bickering and reaches agreement prior to the trial on areas that may be a source of conflict amongst the judges.

John has owned 8 dogs in 40 years. He started them all as puppies. Among them were four FC/AFC's, 3 Double Header winners, 1 National Champion. All of them had Derby points. Two of them, who were not field champions, had all-age points. It is doubtful that anyone in this sport has had such a record with only eight dogs AND trained and handled them all himself--an amateur in the truest sense of the word.

He is an 8-point judge and judged innumerable trials across the country. His trials are known for the quality of his tests and the fairness of the judgments.

He has absolute standards of honesty and fair-play in judging and running and is well known for his frankness and honesty. He encouraged and started many young people in training and running their own dogs. Many have attributed their success to his teaching and encouragement.

His accomplishments are not shown in offices held but in the admiration and respect of the people who know him and the success of his dogs in competition
